


You're already off to a good start by wanting to actually understand the thing before applying it! By no means does a compressor just fix bad playing, but there is something to be said about being able to play consistently and dynamically in a way that suits the songs, and doing so on purpose. One caution I would give (which is just my opinion) is if you are a newer player don't lean on it too early. Many will tell you it's essential, I'll leave that up to you. If they have pedals beyond a tuner, there's usually a compressor in there. Try to set your threshold to what seems like your most constant playing (or maybe a smidge higher), anything above that threshold gets brought down to that level so your playing sounds more even.
